Rambling Again

Recently several people have asked me about my book The Ramblings of a Mad Stitcher. So I thought that I would take a few minutes here to tell you about it and answer some of the questions I have been asked.

I have been journaling since I was a young girl with her first *diary*. Over the years I have found it to be both helpful and therapeutic. It has been a way to chronicle all the things that happen in one's lifetime and also helps to relieve the stress from many of these things--my grandmother called them *Life Happenings*. Therefore, this has just become a part of my life. I will admit though, that I prefer paper and pen over the computer--it just seems more intimate somehow.

A few years ago I was going through a remarkabley stressful *Life Happening* and I was using my journal a a sounding board. On a particularly bad day I chose to share one entry with some friends on the Teresa Wentzler BB. Over a few weeks I began sharing more and more and one day I realized that many people were avidly awaiting my daily posts. So I began Rambling every day. It was suggested that I write a book. I have always enjoyed writing and had dreamed of one day being a famous author! Even so I knew I would never be a professional so I just kept on with my little stories. As my husband's condition worsened and I began seeing similar symptoms in my Mom I wanted to do something to help fight Alzeimer's. So I compiled my litttle stories and did a bit of editing and finishing and printed them up into a *book* that I made for sale to benefit the Alzeimer's Foundation. It is a self published, spiral bound, softback book and all profits go to benefit Alzeimer's research. If you are interested in ordering one of these books send me an email at mad_stitcher@yahoo.com or leave a comment here including your email address.

Thanks to everyone who has shown interest in this project. It has proven to be more therapeutic than I ever could have imagined.

Several people have also asked me how I became the *Mad Stitcher*--well that is for another day!

Feeling Better

Well I slept all day yesterday and I am feeling a bit better today. Hopefully the worse is over. The second model for Vilma is almost finished. Hopefully by tomorrow it it will be done. I have enjoyed stitching these designs and can't wait for them to be revealed so that I can share them with all of you. If you like Quakers you will love these. These are a bit different from my normal type of stitching but it has been fun doing some plain cross stitch for a change. And of course, working with Vikki's silks is always a treat.

When this is done I must get back to my Persian Iris Garden. I have been putting in about an hour a day on it (the black fabric is *killing* me!) but I really must try to do better. I have never taken this long to get a model done before and although there is no deadline, I still feel a bit guilty about it. At least I know now to never agree to stitching on black fabric again so that is a valuable lesson. I also have another of Martina's models to do shortly--as soon as I get all the materials--and Vilma has asked me to do some more for her. So now I will be able to alternate between the complex and the more simple designs so maybe they will all go faster.

I must go to bed now and try to get a good night sleep. So till tomorrow.....sweet dreams.

Update....and more

Well, I haven't conquered the world but I did manage to start the second model for Vilma. I am taking lots of naps and still feeling yucky! This is the first really bad cold I've had in about 3 years so I guess I am really lucky that way but I just don't like feeling this way.

Tonight I am working on the model and watching Harry Potter movies. I love Harry Potter and am looking forward to July for the last book to be released. Am also looking forward to the next movie. Anyone else love Harry?

Uggggg!!!!

This cold has really taken it's toll on me and I am accomplishing nothing! I did manage to finish up the first model for Vilma but that's it. I went to bed and have stayed there. Maybe tomorrow morning I will feel like conquering the world but for now...back to bed!

Today I have been fighting a cold and haven't felt good at all. All I want to do is sleep! But I really cannot afford to do that. There is just so very much I need to do. However I just got the best pick-me-up. I received word from Vikki that my Patchwork Sampler has arrived. I am not sure what has attracted me to this one as I usually don't do samplers but I really like this one. It is designed by Jan Houtman and if you like Samplers he has done some of the best I have seen.

The first of the two models from Vilma is almost finished so I am hoping to complete it tonight. Then I want to start the second one. It really is so much fun to stitch and is looking nice on the 40 ct linen.

I think I will go take a nap and then get started.

Lovely morning

I spent a lovely morning yesterday talking with Vilma (Examplars from the Heart) discussing upcoming designs, 40 ct linen, Vikki Clayton silks, and many other things. I find it so interesting that she lives only about 40 miles from me and I am just now discovering her. She is a lovely person and hope to be meeting her in person soon.

I also spent some time playing with my Silk Tags--trying to do a conversion for a new project that I want to start sometime in the near future. It was so much fun just fonding the textures and visulaizing the colors of all the VC silks. If you have never tried them, do yourself a big favor and do so-- Vikki Clayton Silks. They are exquisite both in quality of silk and all the gorgeous colors. I can just loose myself in them. And if you want a really big treat, try the premium floss. It is bigger diameter than the regular floss (about the size of two strands) so you can use only one strand on 28-34 ct fabrics. My favorite color, of course, is Dragon Blood ( a rich varigated red) but Dragon Opal (a beautiful dark, rich green and black varigated) is a close second--with many others following very closely behind. I managed to get most of the conversion done but will have to ask Vikki about 4 of them.

I am looking forward to some new designs which have just been released at Market and am planning the fabrics and fibers to stitch them. Now all I have to do is find out where I can order some more TIME !!!

Catching my Breath

Wow, I can't believe it has been so long since I posted here! But for the last two weeks I have been fighting the clock trying to get a model ready for the Nashville Market. I finally got it into the mail on Thursday--expressed directly to the Hotel! So now I can finally breathe again.

But a lot has happened over these last two weeks so I will try to catch you up on my wild ride!

First of all, I have been introduced to a new designer (for me) to do some model stitching. She is Vilma from Examplars From The Heart and if you would like to see some of her designs you can view them here (just click on conversions/assortments and scroll down) or here. She is best known probably for And They Sinned but she has done many wonderful designs and I feel blessed to be asked to stitch these models for her.

I have also been introduced to 40 ct linen. I had never tried it before--was always afraid I couldn't see it or that I wouldn't enjoy it. But let me tell you, once you adjust a bit it is wonderful! I can see myself fast becoming addicted to it. I sure hope these old eyes will hold up.

I also have a couple of new Chatelaine Designs to do as well as getting back to my FAS so I will be busy for a while--but then I love to be busy.

This past weekend was supposed to be our get-together weekend with my Stitching Sisters but a couple were sick and couldn't make it. But Kiki came and we had a wonderful time stitching and talking together for 2 and a half days (almost non-stop!)

She arrived Friday afternoon about 12:30 pm and we immediately began the job of *catching up*. She brought me several surprises (we are always picking up small gifts for each other). She brought me A new yardstick (I had broken mine), a quilters ruler and a rotary cutter (getting me ready for my Crazy Quilt), a serge protector with a long cord (which I haven't been able to find, and a channel lock wrench, vice grip pliers and screwdrivers (small size) for my stitching bag. Now you may think that some of these things are a bit strange for a stitching bag but they really aren't. I am always needing to tighten nuts or screws on my light/magnifier, chart holder or some such --or to tighten screws in my eyeglasses--or a variety of such things! So I am as pleased as punch! She also brought me fresh apples and STRAWBERRIES!!! which were quite good considering they were a greenhouse variety. Can't wait for April when our strawberries come into season! I had made a big pot of vegetable soup so for supper we had veggie soup and cornbread and for dessert we had vanilla ice cream with strawberries. Simply wonderful.

On Friday night we both went to bed early as we were very tired for some reason but we were up early Saturday and started in stitching again. We really got a lot accomplished and never ran out of things to talk about. Kiki worked on Chatelaine's Pompeii Garden and I worked on my newest model. We barely stopped long enough to eat. We finally looked up and realized that it was 2:30 am! So decided we better call it a night!

Sunday moning started bright and early with a leaisurely breakfast and then we settled in once more to begin stitching for the day. I really hated for it to come to an end but Kiki had to leave about 5:00 pm so that she could attend her hand bells rehearsal at her church. After we said our goodbyes I checked out my emails and then back to stitching. It is so nice to have stitching buddies with whom you can share your love of needlework!

Thanks to All

Thanks to everyone of you who has made comments to my posts. I still haven't figured out how to reply to you individually --unless you include your email addy in the comment. But I have decided to just add a new comment so that hopefully you will check back and see any comments and answers to questions you might have made.

My FAS is being put aside once more as my latest model arrived a few minutes ago. I will be extremely busy over the next week since there is a serious deadline crunch here. But I will try to give you an update pic as I go along.

I have also taken some new pics to share with you as soon as I can get them downloaded. So please check back often. You never know what you might find!

What's going on?

After trying for two days to get into my blog I finally made it. I'm not sure what has been going on with Blogspot but hopefully it is fixed now.

Thanks to everyone who has made comments to my posts. I do read and enjoy them but I haven't discovered how to acknowledge them directly. I am glad that some of you take the time to read and enjoy my blog.

I have been stitching on my FAS for the last few days while waiting for my latest model materials to arrive. I know, I know. I said no more models this year...but what I mean it that I will be cutting back on them. I am finishing up some deadline pieces now and will then have one or two major models to complete over the next few months with no fixed deadlines--so I can do some personal stitching also, which is what I am aiming for.

Life has been getting in the way lately. My aches and pains are seemingly more aggravating at the moment and I think it is mostly weather related. It has been very dull and dreary and rainy for the last week or so and the temps have gotten much colder. All I want to do is sit in front of a fire and relax. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get my fireplace started this year --pilot light won't ignite--so I will have to make do with my blankie and stitching to keep me warm.

I have also tried to do some more sorting and clearing out of my closets and drawers, etc. But it has been difficult to get in the mood to do this. I know it must be done but *I don't wanna do it!* Oh,well, as Scarlett would say....I'll do it tomotrrow.

Snowflake Nativity

Snowflake Nativity, originally uploaded by The Mad Stitcher.

When photographing some of my finishes this week I realized that I had not shared a pic of my Snowflake Nativity from ©Chatelaine Designs. This was formerly Christmas Mystery I and has just been re-released as a chart. I stitched it on Ice Blue Lugana using the required silks, RG Petite Treasure Braids, Delica beads, Swarovski Crystals and Crystal Treasures. The Madonna and Child in the center is all stitched over one and I also added additional crystals on the bottommost *swag* of beads. I really like how this one turned out and is my favorite of the Christmas Mysteries thus far.

It has been very cold and rainy and dreary for the last several days and I have just wanted to curl up in a corner and stitch. I think I am going to make a pot of vegetable soup and relax tonight. I may even take a break from my model and stitch on FAS for a while.

New Goodies

I just received my order of silks from Vikki Clayton and I admit that I am drooling over the colors and texture of all these silks. I got 16 glorious 50 yard spools to use on the Christmas presents I got--Rosemarkie, St Sylvestry, St Georges, St Germaine, and the four M design trees. Now I just have to decide which color for which chart. I am so looking forward to doing these. I think I have chosen Dragon Opal for Rosemarkie as I really like the richness of these colors. And I have a lovely purple-icious that I will use for one of them and a gorgeous Dragon's Hoarde that is earmarked for one of the trees. It is so much fun just playing with the colors and trying to decide which I like best--as if I could choose just one! And then trying to decide which I will start first. Well, that's another hard to make decision. I guess it will come down to which I pick up first! Now I must get back to my fond....ummmm...stitching.

Enchanted Fairy

Enchanted Fairy, originally uploaded by The Mad Stitcher.

This is the Enchanted Fairy from ©Passione Ricamo that I have been working on as a model for the last few weeks. I finally got her finished up and now she is pressed and I will be mailing her off today. She is stitched on 28 ct Lugana using DMC floss, Waterlilies silks, RG Petite Treasure Braids, and Mill Hill Beads. I love the colors in this one and enjoyed stitching her a lot.

Now I am moving on to my next model. Soon I shall be able to stitch some things for myself.

Waterlilies arrived...

The errant Waterlilies have finally arrived so I can finish up this model! It will be a relief as I know it is needed for a deadline. I will share a photo of it once it is done. I have been working on another model this week and hope it goes more smoothly than the last one. There are so many things I want to stitch and so little time. I really want this year to be for me but I have to finish up these obligations before I can start anything else. This doesn't keep me from dreaming and planning, however! Oh well...that's for another day...

French Alphabet Sampler

French Alphabet Sampler , originally uploaded by The Mad Stitcher.

Well, I have only been able to work on this on the weekends as I do my model stitching on weekdays. But I am enjoying this one so much. I have frogged the green and restitched it in the Dragon Blood. This one is moving pretty fast. I really hate to put it down when the time comes to do so.

Saturday, January 13, 2007

Sorry...

Things have really been crazy around here. Sorry I haven't posted in a few days. I am trying to get things finished up with a model I am stitching but I am having trouble getting a skein of Waterlilies that I need for it. The chart said 1 skein but I have used it and still have a lot left to do with it. Hopefully my skein will be here Tuesday --since the PO is closed on Monday-- and I can get this one finsihed. So this weekend I have been working on my FAS and will try to get an updated pic on tomorrow. Thill then....

Changed my Mind....

After looking at my FAS for a few days I think I will frog the green and go monochromatic after all. I just don't think the green is looking as well as I had hoped. But it will have to wait a few more days. I am working diligently to try and finish up a model which has a deadline fast approaching. But I can hardly wait to get back to it.

I have so many new charts that I want to do. Santa was so good to me this year and I will have fun planning out the fibers and fabrics for them.

French Alphabet Sampler

French Alphabet Sampler, originally uploaded by The Mad Stitcher.

Well, we are all still in shock! What a way to begin the New Year. I have been unable to sleep so I have been trying to stitch a bit. I began my FAS at midnight on New Years Eve and managed to get a good bit done before the sad news hit us. I thought I would share a photo of my start. It is stitched on 32 ct white Belfast Linen using Vikki Clayton Silks in Dragon Blood, OMG Red 1149 and Isle Green.

In Shock!

We just received word that Bunny's husband was killed in a car accident this morning! We are all in shock and Bunny, of course, is devastated. Off to cry some more.....

Lovely weekend

This weekend I had the get together for a group of friends. This was our *Christmas* and we had a wonderful time. We stitched a lot, talked a lot, ate too much, slept too little and laughed so much our sides hurt! It was wonderful! I got lots of stitching stash--4 Long Dog Sampler Charts (Rosemarkie, St Georges, St Sylvestry, and St Germaine) 4 M Designs Christmas Trees (Love, Dream, Peace and Kathy) 15 Accentuate metallic fibers, 4 Needle Necessities, a telescoping magnet, the Vikki Clayton Silks Sample Tag Assortment with binder, a carousel for my stitching basket, a GC to European Cross Stitch, a GC to my LNS, and I know I am forgetting something! I also got lots of non-stitching stuff--a jar opener (to help my arthritic hands), the Harry Potter book collection, a battery powered drill (all for myself!), a calendar mouse pad, leather memo holder, candy, coccoa, candles, and more! The biggest gift of all is just having the friendship and love of such a wonderful group of ladies. I feel so very fortunate.

The weekend started on Thursday evening with the arrival of Bunny. Then on Friday, Tracy and Kiki showed up in the early afternoon followed by Angela and finally Angel. Some of them had to leave on Sunday evening but Kiki stayed and brought in the New Year with me. She left this afternoon and I feel so alone now. It was a great weekend but I admit I am terribly tired. I think I will go take a nap!

Happy New Year!

I wish for all of us a Healthy, Happy, and Safe New Year. 2007 is going to be a wonderful year--I just know it!

Wednesday, December 27, 2006

Finally...

It has really been a hectic couple of weeks. But I had a wonderful Christmas. As I told you yesterday I got my best friend back and I got to spend some quality time with my son. I have really been blessed this year. I received several gift certificates to stitching stores as well as a couple of non-stitching ones. Also some cash (which I have earmarked for some silk fibers that I want), and a gc for a lovely pedicure! My son also gave me the gift of his time to help me do some things that I need to do. All in all a good Christmas.

But the good thing is --that it isn't over yet. This weekend I am hosting a get together of 6 friends for our *Christmas* party. We will stitch, talk, eat, exchange gifts, eat, stitch, catch up, stitch......well you get it. So my Christmas is lasting for two weeks! These ladies are the best friends a person could have. They visit with me and take care of me throughout the year and make me feel very special at all times. I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have such a group of caring, loving friends. I will definitely tell you all about our weekend next week.

My Christmas Miracle

Last year my best friend was diagnosed with Cancer. After much thought, prayer, and discussion she decided not to go through with Chemo as the doctor told her that although it might lengthen the time she has left it would lessen the quality of her remaining time. I think this was more devastating to me than it was for her but we have to accept things as they come. A few months later she decided to move back to Spokane, Washington to be with her daughter at the end. I was heartbroken but I understood why she wanted to be there. Thorough a comedy of errors on both ends we lost touch after a few weeks--telephone #'s changing, visiting with her sister who was then hospitalized and moved, daughter remarried and I didn't know her new name, etc. I was frantic to try and find her and she had been trying to reach me--my telephone # had also changed and I couldn't let her know.

On Dec 23rd I had a nightmare about her and I just knew something had happened. I was determined to find her somehow. I decided that the next morning I would call her estranged husband and see if he would give me her telephone number. (I had my doubts that he would co-operate, but I was determined to try!) So on Christmas Eve morning I called but didn't get an answer. Later that afternoon I tried again. I was NOT going to let Christmas come and go without talking to her!! I dialed the number and SHE answered the phone!!! It seems that she and Harold had missed each other more than they realized and had reconciled! And she had come home!

I was estatatic! As was she. And we talked for an hour and it truly was the best Christmas present I could have wished for! And to make things even better...her health was better. Her Cancer had slowed down (although not in remission) and she was feeling good.

My Best Friend is Home Again! Miracles do happen.

Merry Christmas

This has been a hectic week but Christmas is finally here. I hope that each of you have a wonderful and safe Holiday and a prosperous and healthy New Year. I will be back later to tell you everything that has been going on but for now I must go see what Santa brought me.

Ornament Finished

Windchime Ornie Front, originally uploaded by Mad Stitcher.

Well, the holidays have really cut into my stitching time but I have managed to finish a couple of small projects. One is an ornament for an ornament exchange. I designed this Hardanger ornament and stitched it with DMC Pearl Cotton on 20 ct Metallic Lugana. I added a Mill Hill Snowflake Treasure to the front and personalized the back. I then made it into a windchime. I hope my recipeint likes it. Here is the front side:

Windchime Ornie Back, originally uploaded by Mad Stitcher.

And here is the back side. It was really fun to stitch.

Fun Day

We just had Christmas at my house and it was so much fun. Kaitlin is such a baby doll and Jeb is a wonderful young man. Kaitlin's stocking was a big hit. Everyone liked it-- even Kaitlin who thought it was delicious! I got a GC and cash for STASH and another GC and wonderful homemade goodies as well. I am so happy but very tired as well so I am going to go stitch for a while and then have an early night.

Santa with Tree

Santa with Tree, originally uploaded by The Mad Stitcher.

I have just a few minutes while getting ready for the Family Get-together tomorrow so I thought I would share a photo of Ian's stocking. I think it turned out beautifully. I will be getting his to him on Monday so it will be ready for Santa to fill up with goodies.

On the Rooftop

On the Rooftop, originally uploaded by The Mad Stitcher.

This week has been really crazy and I didn't get much stitching done. But I did finally get Kaitlin's stocking finished. And I think it turned out really well. She will be getting it on Sunday when we have Christmas here at my house. So it will be hanging on Christmas Eve when Santa comes to visit.

I have been busy trying to clean just a bit and put up a tree. It is difficult for me so I am just putting up the small tree again this year. But when I got out all the hand stitched ornaments given to me by stitching friends over the last three or four years it really made me smile. These are the only ornaments that will be on my tree and it will be beautiful.

French Alphabet Sampler Specifics

I was asked about the specifics of my French Alphabet Sampler so I thought I would share it here. I am so excited. I managed to get 6 generations covered with names and/or initials.

Both Maternal and Paternal Grandparents
My Parents
My 2 Brothers and 1 SIL
My Son and Stepdaughter
My 2 step Grandchildren and spouses
My 2 Great-grandchildren
And, of course, my late DH and me--including both surnames, both first names and both initials and our nicknames as well--Stormy and Bo

I think that's a total of 29 names/initials and 3 dates, some stitching motifs and I am going to make a place for a Celtic motif of some sort to represent our heritage. Lynne, did an absolutely fantastic job on this and I am completely satisfied with the results.

I am going to be using White Belfast for this one to make the Dragon Blood really stand out beautifully. I can't wait for Jan 1st!

My decision is made!

Today I received the sample skeins of silk that I ordered in various shades of red. I wanted to make sure that I have the right one for my FAS. Since this design is so large and will take a lot of time and fibers, I want it to be perfect. And I found it. It is Dragon Blood silk from Vikki Clayton. This is a varigated silk ranging from a dark rich red to a bright Christmas red with just the right tone and shading. A really rich and vibrant color without being garrish. I am so pleased and excited. Now I just have to order my 30 skeins of it and I will be ready for my January 1st start date.

Excited....

This weekend was a very quiet one for me. I spent Friday and Saturday stitching on the Mystic Meadows model that I am doing. This is the 3rd one of these I have stitched but it is such a wonderful project that I do not mind. On Sunday I really didn't feel like stitching so I sorted and organized some more of my fibers. I am trying to get all my stash organized so that I know what I have!

Today I received the *package has been sent* notice from Vikki Clayton about the package containing my skeins of reds to try out for my FAS. I am so excited. I will finally be able to make the final decision on fibers for this so that I can start it on January 1st. ( I always have a special project to start at midnight on Jan 1 !) 2007 is going to be the year for ME. I am going to limit my model stitching and my obligatory stitching as much as possible so that I can get some things finished for myself. I know, I know. I say this every year--but this year I mean it!

French Alphabet Sampler--begins Jan 1st
Chatelaine's Mystery X Garden--begins Jan 1st
WIP's for Alhambra Garden (Chatelaine), Ingrid Bergman Rose (The Silver Lining), Rembrandt Tulips (The Silver Lining), among others--will be completed in 2007!

Alphabetissimo

Alphabetissimo, originally uploaded by The Mad Stitcher.

Today I would like to share a photo of a model that I recently finished for European Cross Stitch. It is Alphabetissimo from Papillion Creations and was stitched on white Jobelan using DMC fibers. Altough I haven't stitched this type of sampler before, I really enjoyed it.

This week has been a bit hectic.. I did manage to finish Kaitlin's stocking so I plan to assemble it this weekend. I also finished up an ornament/windchime for an exchange but can't share the pic quite yet. I will do so when it is received.

Christmas is getting really close and I am no where close to being ready. I did manage to get Jason's Christmas present without him seeing it. And I think he will be really surprised when he opens it! I want to get my house cleaned up but just don't have the strength and energy to do it. I seem to be doing everything in slow motion these days. But I am going to try to get some things done tomorrow.

Christmas Stocking Update

Well, I have finished Kaitlin's Christmas Stocking except for the personalization. I am looking for a different alphabet to use and may end up having to design one I like. But at least I can relax a bit now. It is from the magazine formerly Stitcher's World--can't remember the new name--called Santa on the Roof. I stitched it on Evening Blue Murano fabric. I will take a pic to share as soon as I get the name on it.

So I plan to assemble both the Christmas stockings for Kaitlin and Ian this weekend. Now back to my models for a couple of days.

Sunday, November 26, 2006

Today I have been playing with my silks trying to decide on my fibers for the French Alphabet Sampler which I plan to start on January 1. I just got my *Mystery Spools* from Vikki Clayton and the reds are *almost* perfect , but they range from a medium to light to lighter red. What I am hoping for is a dark to medium to light variation. I know I can just get the solids and change threads but a nice varigated will be so much simpler. So I am going to beg and plead and try to bribe Vikki into adding a darker version of these OMG reds varigated to the line. Wish me luck.

The Blah's...

Yesterday was such a wasted day. I did next to nothing--just didn't want to move! And today hasn't been much better. Last night I did make significant progress on Kaitlin's stocking and if all goes well it will be finished tonight. But for some reason I just haven't wanted to do anything--not even stitch. I am making excuses for not picking up a needle--even though I have some serious deadlines. I finally gave myself permission to take some time off, so the stocking (all cross stitch, nothing difficult, don't have to think too hard) is all I'm doing. Hopefully when I get it finished I can get the two stockings assembled and at least that pressure will be off. Then I can focus on the two models that I need to get done.

The house is a mess and even thinking about the Christmas decorating is too much for me at this time. Our Christmas with the Bonhams always comes early--a week or so before the 25th--so I really do need to get a move on. My decorating has been almost non-existant since Bo and my Mom passed away but I am thinking of doing a bit more than my tiny little tree this year. I may even put up a big tree again--after all, this is Kaitlin's first Christmas. I guess we'll see when the time comes. First I really need to get the house cleaned and the rugs shampood. How do you spell *shampood*? This doesn't look right!

Okay, enough for now. I am going to try to finish that stocking!

Friday, November 24, 2006

Black Friday

I don't know about you but I was NOT going to get into the mess on the roads today. Even though our state offered a tax free weekend, it just wasn't worth it to me. Mostly I just can't fight the crowds anymore--partly because of my disability--but mainly because of the stress. Crowds just get on my nerves!

Instead I stitched on Kaitlin's Christmas stocking--almost finished now-- journaled a bit and relaxed--nothing stressful at all. Now tomorrow is another day. I really must get back to my sorting and organizing and trying to get the house in order for the holidays. Anyone want to help?

I Had a Date....

With the most wonderful and attractive man! My son, Jason, invited me to dinner with him for Thanksgiving. I haven't cooked for Thanksgiving in many, many, years as we usually waited for Christmas for the big home cooked meal. Normally I take my family out to a local restuarant. I had planned to do the same this year (even though it is just Jason and me now) but my son beat me to the invitation. And, I admit, it was wonderful to be the recipient for a change. We wanted to miss the crowds so we waited until about 2:30pm to go and it was wonderful. Turkey and dressing with all the fixings--and I didn't have to cook (or clean up!) afterwards!! Plus it gave Jason and me a chance to talk about important things and not so important things, and even tease each other a bit. It was fantastic. And now we are home and I am getting ready to sit down and stitch for a while--if I can stay awake!

I hope that each of you have had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.

Counting My Blessings

When I'm worried and I can't sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep
Counting my Blessings.

When my bankroll is getting small
I think of when I had none at all
And I fall asleep
Counting my Blessings.

I think about a nursery
Filled with curly little heads
And one by one I count them
As they slumber in their beds.

So when you're worried and you can't sleep
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
And you'll fall asleep
Counting your Blessings.

I am Thankful for:

My Life--as Life is not guaranteed
My Son--who is my pride and my joy and without whom I would be alone
My Step Family--for they welcomed me and made me one of them
My Friends--both *real* and online for without them I could not survive
My Memories--for those who have gone on to the next life (I miss you all)
My Home--though humble (and messy) as it may be it is sound and comfortable
My Talents--for they were given to me with no strings attached
My Needlework--for it keeps me sane when Life gets crazy
My Health--for even though it is bad it could be much worse
My Faith--for it gets me though each day and without it I hate to think what Life would be

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! Join me in Counting Your Blessings.

Great Day today...

Today was a great day--at least after I got my mail! I got a package from Vikki Clayton with 5 hanks (50 yards each) of floss (yummy!) and the sample tags for the OMG Reds and Dragon Blood so that I can finally make the decision about fibers for my French Alphabet Sampler. The colors are wonderful. And Vikki's silks are marvelous to the touch! Then I got my International Dyers Collaboration Pack and my Autumn Pack from Jo at DinkyDyes--absolutely gorgeous fabrics and fibers. I feel like Christmas came a little early. The links for both of these sites are in my sidebar. If you haven't tried either of these then you definitely need to check them out. I will be stitching tomorrow for sure. I want to take the OMG Reds for a test drive!

Slow Going...

Today has been a difficult day. I have been trying to work on the Persian Iris Garden model for Martina but I am having an awful time with the black Belfast! Using my magnifier for more than an hour or so at a time gives me a horrible headache so I feel as though I am not making much progress. I know I must keep going but I often ask myself why I said yes to stitching on this 32 ct black fabric. Believe me when I stitch mine it will NOT be on black! I have managed to go back and do all the beading in the center section and on the *carpets* Filling in those blank spaces did make it look a little more finished.

On the other hand I am making progress on Kaitlin's Christmas stocking. I am hoping to have it finished this weekend so that I can get it and Ian's stocking assembled. (Ian is the new baby of a dear friend and his stocking was finished a few months ago.) I really want to give these to the mothers soon so they can be hung in plenty of time for the holidays.

So I will keep plugging away and hopefully I will have something to share with you soon.

The Mad Stitcher Strikes Again

Today I will be sharing Chapter 2. This chapter is quite personal but hopefully it will give you a little insight into the workings of this Mad Stitcher.

Chapter 2
Retrospection

It is difficult to understand the present or predict the future unless you know a little of the history behind the chain of events. It would be like watching the last five minutes of a movie and then trying to explain the plot! It just doesn’t work. Therefore, if one wants to understand the new Millennium, one must first look at the old one. And if one wants to understand The Mad Stitcher one must first get a peak at what transpired before. For each link in this chain has been either weakened or strengthened by the events that forged it.

At times The Mad Stitcher feels that she has made little contribution to the overall scheme of things. When she was practicing her nursing, she made a valuable contribution to her job, but nothing that someone else couldn’t do. In her opinion she simply did her job. It didn’t matter that she spent that extra minute comforting that frightened child or that she spent her lunchtime with the elderly gentleman who had just lost his wife in surgery. It didn’t matter that she took that extra shift of call because a co-worker needed time off to go to a wedding, or a funeral, or a meeting, or any of the other reasons she witnessed during the thirty years she worked in the Operating/Post Anesthesia Recovery Rooms. It didn’t matter that she had won several Symbol of Excellence awards for her dedicated service. Or that she was always the first to volunteer to work in her community.

When choosing a career, the Mad Stitcher felt she had had to compromise. She had dreamed of becoming a surgeon. But in those days, the early sixties, it wasn’t easy for a woman to get into medical school and it was very expensive. She didn’t think she would qualify for an academic scholarship and she knew her parents couldn’t afford it. So, instead, she compromised. She became a nurse.

When she was younger she had wanted to get away from the small town she called home. She wanted to travel and see more of the world and she felt that her family was holding her back. Again she compromised. She began to resent it. And even now she wonders if that contributed to her decision to marry so young.

The marriage was a mistake from the beginning, but MS had been raised in the belief that marriage was a lifetime commitment. So she stuck it out for five years-five very long years of hell. She worked two jobs to support herself and her baby while her husband did nothing but complain and sit on his…well, you get the idea. It wasn’t until she began to fear for her son that she made the decision to leave.

The Mad Stitcher had been a single parent for most of her son’s childhood. She was Mother, Father, Teacher, Confidant, and everything else her son needed her to be. She wore so many different hats that at times she forgot to be herself. She tried to give him everything he needed and at least a portion of what he wanted. Maybe she loved him too much. She tried to compensate for the absence of a father and tried not to negatively influence her son’s opinions of his father. Maybe she overcompensated.

During these difficult years, the Mad Stitcher had to rely upon her parents more than she would have liked. She never asked for any monetary or financial help, but when she decided to go back to school for her BS degree, she depended on her parents to help with childcare. She knew in the long run she would be better able to provide for her son’s needs but it meant a great deal of sacrifice from everyone. But at her graduation, there was no one present more proud than her son.

As the years went by there were financial difficulties. There were legal difficulties. There were professional problems. There were personal losses. The most devastating was the sudden and totally unexpected death of her wonderful father-followed only months later by the death of her closest friend.

At one of the very lowest points of her life, MS began to wonder just how much more she was expected to bear. She had tolerated so much in her life and didn’t know if she could take any more. She knelt to pray and turned her problems over to the Lord. She left them in his hands and went to work. She knew that He would take care of her. She just didn’t know how. Then one day she met the most remarkable man in the world. She knew immediately that he was the answer to that prayer. He was kind and interesting and loyal. He loved children and was very attentive. Their love was almost instantaneous. MS couldn’t believe it. She wasn’t looking for a man-any man-not as a companion, and especially not as a husband! But here he was and she knew it was meant to be. God certainly does work in mysterious ways!

She was a good wife and mother and tried to make life as comfortable and happy as was possible. She continued to work and enjoy her new contentment. And she thanked God everyday for answering her prayer in such a unique and wonderful way.

Her life became more secure and stable. She had never felt so safe. For the first time, she felt she could begin to repay the people who had been giving her so much through the years. She was able to spend more time with her Mom and help her get back to enjoying life. She spent more time volunteering in her church. And she and her darling husband began to travel and see more of the world.

Her regrets of her past began to fade and the Mad Stitcher realized that the present was all that mattered. She couldn’t change what was but she could make what is the best that it can be.

Life never stays the same. It will lift you up to the mountaintops and then drop you into a valley of despair within a heartbeat. The “ups” and “downs” and “curves” are what make it interesting. Of course, there are times when we wish there were more “ups” and fewer “downs” but we can’t have everything! The Mad Stitcher always tried to accept Life’s little surprises with calm and grace-but seldom succeeded. She did, however, learn the hard way to laugh to keep from crying!

Reflections

by: Kathy Geddes Bonham

Once in a while I have stopped to reflect
On the various things I have been.
And I always believe that if I should blink
The future may never be seen.

I have been first a Daughter and then been a Mom
A Sister, a Lover, and Friend.
A Student, a Teacher, a Stitcher, and Writer
Oh! It’s too much to comprehend.

I have cuddled my child in the dark of the night
When monsters and gremlins abound.
I have kissed bloody elbows to make them feel better
And many lost items I’ve found.

I have cared for the sick and the injured and weak
And comforted those who were lost.
I have driven myself to the point of collapse
And seldom thought of the cost.

I have crossed picket lines when others refused
An attempt to eliminate strife.
I have been a promoter for goodness and love
And a fighter for justice in life.

I have set out to save the world from itself
Though hopeless and bleak from the start.
And dreamed of a better tomorrow for all
One Future, One Nation, One Heart.

Only Fate can decide if I’ve failed or succeeded
If my efforts were justly expressed.
I can only proclaim that whatever may come
I have always given my Best.

Let me always be grateful for all that I have
And feel Blessed in all that I do.
May I always remember that Life is a gift
And treasure it always as new.

The Mad Stitcher Strikes Again

Why is it so difficult for me to keep up with this blog? I love to write and I journal almost every day but I admit that I prefer paper and pen over the computer. I sit in my chair--usually at night when all is quiet--and reflect on my day and what I have and have not done. I ask myself questions--many of which I cannot answer. I often wonder if I make a difference or if there is a reason that I am still here when everyone in my life seems to be leaving. I have been asked by friends to share more of my stories and journal entries so over the next few days I will go back and share with you some of my ramblings and I will try to update you all on what is going on in the life of this Mad Stitcher. So today I will share with you Chapter 1 of my manuscript--The Mad Stitcher Strikes Again.

Chapter 1

Dust in the Wind

A New Millennium… Millennium…Mil-len-ni-um…Don’t you just love that word? It is so alliterative and almost musical. It just flows off the tongue. But what is it? I can’t comprehend it. Yes, I know it is a thousand years. Yes, I know it is a hundred decades. Yes, I know it is twelve hundred months-fifty-two hundred weeks-365,250 days!! But how much is that? It seems unfathomable. Is there any way to make the numbers more manageable-a way to better illustrate the magnitude of what lies ahead? I don’t know.

A few days ago I was rolling up pennies to take to the bank. As I counted out fifty, then a hundred, I looked at them and lined them up 10 x 10 and realized that this represented only a tenth of one thousand. I kept counting. When I had a thousand lying before me I realized that if each penny represented a year, then that would be a millennium. But no, that didn’t help. I just can’t seem to wrap my tiny brain around it!

I can only concentrate on my small portion of that Millennium and hope that I can make the most of it. I don’t want to waste a single moment. Life is too precious.

“As sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives…”

I remember watching the soap opera “Days of our Lives” as a child. I was about 8 or 9 years old at the time and I can still hear the voice of Macdonald Carey as he spoke the opening words. It was the first time I had heard this phrase and I really didn’t understand the underlying meaning. As the years went by and I grew up I became more aware of just how very true these words are. The days do pass by as quickly as does the sand in an hourglass. Each day by itself is just as insignificant as a single grain of sand. Sometimes it can be very irritating. Sometimes it can produce a pearl. But put a lot of them together and soon we have a beach! So does this mean that we can do without that single grain? Ten grains? A hundred grains? How many can we forfeit before it becomes significant?

When thinking of a millennium, I am most often amazed at the very enormity of it. And any word I use doesn’t seem quite “vast” enough. Grandiose…Wondrous…Awesome… Magnificent… I find myself more and more aware of my inadequacies. I can never seem to find the right words. But then again, does it matter?

Would a thousand years make a difference to the child suffering from hunger? Would it change things for the elderly man left alone and unloved? Or to the woman facing years of chemotherapy and treatment for cancer? Or to the young person just diagnosed with Aids? Would it change the face of a nation on the brink of war? So I ask again, does it matter?

We ask questions over and over-- searching for answers from philosophers, religious icons, political leaders, educators and many others sources. But the answers are elusive.

The thing I find most interesting is that we keep asking-- trying to figure things out--to see the future. Is it simply curiosity? Or is it an innate need to investigate--to learn? I don’t know this either. It seems I know less and less each day!

So much can happen in a millennium. And only a fraction of the events will be chronicled for posterity. Fifty-plus generations of human beings will be born and die during that time, and each life will contribute to the fabric of time. I ask myself… “What will be my contribution to this tapestry?” “Will I make a difference?”

After pondering these questions for a while, I realize there is no easy answer. If I were still young and healthy I think I would be able to help make this a better society-as corny as that may sound. I look around and see things that need to be done, things that need to be changed, and I believe I have the knowledge and the intestinal fortitude to do it. But now my prime is passed and my body has betrayed me. So I can’t dwell on what might be. I can’t go back and change decisions I made in the past. I can only hope to learn from my mistakes and not repeat them. I cannot--no, must not--spend time with regrets. So instead I hope to be able to make a difference in at least one life-even in a small way. I will continue to write. Leaving a written record of what life throws my way. I will continue to stitch…Leaving a part of my imagination and talent for those who follow. This will be my “thread” in the great tapestry. But whether or not it will be background fabric or focal point in the grand scheme of things will remain a mystery.

What will the world be like a thousand years from now? Will there be life on Earth? Will there still be “countries” as we know them now? Democracies? Have we traveled to other worlds? Will it be an ideal “Star Trek” type world or a “Jetson’s” hi-tech type world? Will it be more like the “Terminator” in a post apocalyptic society? Or will it be like none of these. I can’t answer these questions. I will most probably be dust in the wind long before the mysteries of life are revealed. Only time will give us the answers. But then, I’m not sure I really want to know….

P.S. As I was posting this, my wonderful son was reading over my shoulder. He stopped me at one point and said “Mom, you have already made a difference in more than one life. You are that Pearl.” I have never before felt so touched and he insists that I go back and re-write to be sure I say that! So does this mean it’s back to the drawing board?

My Treasures Workstation

This is one of my recent finishes I thought I would share with you. It is My Treasures Workstation designed by Judy Odell of Just A Thought Designs. I chose to work with Needle Necessities for this one and love how it turned out. It is stitched on 32 count Star Sapphire Linen and was professionally finished by Judy for me. I showed it off at the beach last week and everyone really liked it also.

I will try to begin catching you up on some of my finishes but you can also go to my website http://www.Madstitcher.com to see some of my finished pieces.

Seaside Stitchers Retreat

Last Weekend we attended our annual Seaside Stitchers Retreat in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It is hosted by Meg Thompson Shinall of The Flower Thread Company. Each year we do a sampler based on the *moon names*. So far we have done Wolf Moon, Lenton Moon, Snow Moon, Pink Moon, Full Flower Moon, Strawberry Moon, Buck Moon, and this year is Sturgeon (or Fish) Moon. I originally missed the first three but have the kits and will catch up with them some day.

My *weekend* started on Tuesday evening when Kiki arrived at my house. We spent the evening stitching and catching up and doing last minute things. Wednesday morning arrived and we finished packing up the car and headed out. The trip was at a leisurely pace, a stop for lunch and we arrived at the hotel about 2 pm only to discover that my power chair wouldn't work. Thanks to the wonderful bellmen at the Hilton we got it into the Bellcaptains' office and went to check in. The room wasn't quite ready so we sat in the lobby and met up with Bunny and then with Carol and caught up with the new *retiree*. Upon reaching our suite we were met with the most beautiful view! The ocean and the beach were gorgeous! Bunny and Kiki decided to make a quick trip to Wal-mart (when have we ever gone anywhere and not hit the Wal-mart? It's a tradition, right?) and I rested a bit. I got in touch with The Scooter Store and arranged for someone to repair my chair. I was stitching peacefully when suddenly an *alarm* started going off. I began looking around trying to figure out what it was. I decided it must be the alarm on the clock that someone had set for p.m. instead of a.m. so I got up to turn it off--only it didn't turn off. I kept looking for the cause of the annoying sound and finally determined that it was coming from outside. Just as I went to close the door it stopped. I sat back down to my stitching again and, of course it started back up again! We later discovered that it was the safety alarm on the electric scaffolding from the construction site! That evening Kiki, Bunny and I ate in the hotel resturant and had a great time with George, our waiter.
On Thursday morning Kiki and I decided to just hang out and stitch and rest and wait for Angel to arrive. Although we were getting a bit worried since we had not heard anything at all from her. Little did we know that she had stayed up late the night before making Zucchini bread for all of us!--and she had forgotten her phone charger, so her cell phone had died! But she arrived safely. We were joined for a visit by Nancy Hall and Carol and got a chance to find out about Nancy's move and new *job*. We touched base with Nan and Carla and then we went down to Meg's room for some wine and cheese and the preview of the Fish Moon projects. They are wonderful and we couldn't wait to begin! I then met the repairman and he reaired my chair for me. For those that wondered about the problem, he replaced the battery and the battery charger. Then we decided to go out for my *annual fish dinner*! It was wonderful (Kiki and Angel--remember I did apologize!) Then back to the suite for some stitching and *itching and a birthday party for Angel and me. It was great. I got some wonderful things as did Angel. I got a portable CD player for my car (This has been on my wish list for a very long time!), some pastic organizers for both beads and stash, a yard of Belfast linen (now I can finally start my French Alphabet Sampler), some of my favorite Crystal Light, a wonderful flavored Tea, the latest Monica Ferris novel--Sins and Needles--, a new Tacky Bob, and Angel and I shared a beautiful and delicious birthday cake. It really was a wonderful treat. I had already received a wonderful rolling organizer from Tracy which holds everything I need when I travel and was using for this weekend. I really like it when my birthday goes on for a week!!
Friday morning arrived bright and early to sunshine and warm temperatures and the ocean breeze and sounds . It was glorious (until the construction noise started back up). We stitched for a while and then Meg, Barb, Nancy, Alta, and a couple more people--sorry I can't remember everyone-- joined us in our suite for an impromptu --oh, what is the word?--(mini class helping us with problem areas from past classes). Then Angel, Kiki and I went to McAllisters for lunch. I had never experienced their baked potatos and all I can say is *ummmmmmmmmmmm*! Angel and Kiki dropped me back at the hotel and made a run to Michael's. Then we were joined by Bunny and stitched and rested until time for the *weekend* to begin. The class started out with *goodie bags* from Meg, Jennifer, and Bunny! Thank you all so very much! We began our Friday night project, chose our Secret Pals, and had show and tell. Susan R received a special gift for travelling the furthest (Oman)--a beautiful quilted tablerunner made by Beth. And Diane recieved another for coming the least distance (Myrtle Beach). And then Carol received the shock of her life! That's a story left better told by Beth or Carol! (But Beth, I will be happy to *babysit* your box anytime!) We had a wonderful time. Then we went back up to the suite where we stitched some more. Kiki and Bunny went to bed but Angel and I stayed up talking and stitching until about 1:45 am. I finished my Friday night project with my usual *personalizations*! Thanks, Meg ! The needlebook is perfect!
Saturday arrived early--too early for some of us-- to a wonderful warm sunny day and once more the class began with treats from Beth, Angel, and Tracy (who was not even there!) Thanks so much ladies! Secret Pal gifts began showing up throughout the day and these were all so fitting to the recipients. I don't know how it worked out that way but somehow each one seemed so perfect. We began the day with introductions and receiving our kits for the sampler. We began our practice pieces and in spite of the *slowness to catch on* for some of us--namely this mad stitcher--we managed to persevere and I finished my candlering/band and it is now residing on my mantle! I plan to make some more of these--maybe for Christmas presents! We broke for our group photo and a delightful deli style lunch. Then back to class to discover more treats from Meg.
During the afternoon break some of the ladies decided to go to Build a Bear Workshop but I chose to go rest a bit and I finished up my candlering. When I went back downstairs to the classroom at 7 pm I found someone was sitting in my place! There was Mr. Rip-it! A *Frog* surgeon, dressed in scrubs, xray in hand, and birth certificate in place. Perfect for me as most of you know I am a retired Operating Room nurse. He was a gift from Kiki and I do appreciate it so very much! He has kept me company for the last few days! Although I think I am going to exchange the xray for a seam ripper--it seems more appropriate! Nancy H and Carol had devised a game *Go Fishing* and we had a great time. Alta did the list for the Tote search this year and she did a fantastic job--making it very fair for all of us. Thanks, Nancy, Carol, and Alta!
Many of us just didn't want the evening to end because we knew that the next day would bring our Seaside Retreat to an end.
Sunday morning arrived--again with beautiful skies and warm temperatures-- and I am glad to note that the construction crew honored the Sabbeth! Some of us began our day with devotion and then our last class time together this year. We got those last minute instuctions from Meg, revealed our Secret Pal identities (thanks, Alta, I love my gift!), settled up with the shop and unfortunately had to say our goodbyes. Thank you Meg for another wonderful retreat!
Packing up and loading the cars took a little while but soon we were on our way home. Angel, Kiki, and I had lunch at Logan's Roadhouse (another first for me) before heading home. Once again on the road our trip was uneventful and leisurely and we arrived here in Chesnee at about 6:15 pm. Jason helped unload the car and was introduced to Mr. Rip-it! Kiki spent the night here with me so we sat and relaxed and stitched a bit and reflected on the wonderful weekend. We went to bed very,VERY early (for me at least)--10 pm--and got up Monday morning feeling more rested. Kiki left for Monroe (and work) and then I-----did absolutely nothing!!!! As I told Kiki, I think I enjoyed this Seaside better than any that I have attended. The first couple I was alone and only knew Nancy H and Angel. Last year I was in a lot of pain and discomfort. But this year I am remembering more and more of your faces and names and am making new friends. I was more rested and had better accommodations for my needs. And I felt totally more comfortable this year. I am already looking forward to next year.
I want to acknowledge the wonderful new friends I have made this year and welcome to our Seaside retreat. Jennifer--it was great finally putting a face to a name. Harriet it was wonderful meeting you and getting to know you better. Anne, it was great talking with you and working on our *hitching* together! Kerry it was great finally meeting you and realizing that you are the same Kerry from the Chatelaine BB. Diane it was great renewing our friendship and realizing that you, also, are on the Chatelaine BB. And Kathy, sorry we didn't get a chance to get to know each other, but welcome to our group and I hope to see you again next year and get to know you better. I hope I didn't miss anyone.
Once again I want to thank Kiki and Angel and Bunny for making this weekend possible and pleasureable for me. Thanks, to Carol, Nancy, Nan, Alta, and Susan for your kindness this week. And thanks to all of you who were concerned about me and offered your help. If I have forgotten anyone please forgive me. I appreciate everything that each of you have done for me and just for being my friends.

Signing off for now. Happy Stitching!

Well Here we are again....

I have once more managed to let months go by without an entry. I just cannot make the time to journal on the computer! I have been very busy with my models and commission pieces and barely have time to check my emails and BB's these days. But I am going to try to do better. I will be leaving in a couple of days for a stitching retreat so I will tell you all about it when I return. Till then...Happy Stitching!

Difficult Day

Today has been a very difficult day for me. It is hard to believe another year has gone by since I lost my darling Bo. I still think of him daily and sometimes I still can feel him with me. I visited the cemetery and talked with him for a while and then I went to visit my Mom and Dad's gravesite. Next week will also be the anniversary of my Dad's death and it is even harder to believe that it has been 21 years since we lost him. Everywhere I look I see the sites of those who have left me and I really feel so alone. First Daddy, then my younger brother Gerald, Bo, Mom and many other family members and friends. My brother, David is estranged from me (his choice--not mine!) and that leaves only Jason and me. And now I worry about Jason--what will he do when I am gone. I really wish he could find a wonderful woman and settle down. Although I love my step grands to death I really would love to have grandbabies of my own.

Finally Finished!

I was finally able to get this one finished. This is my Japanese Garden from Chatelaine Designs and it is gorgeous. Stitched on a hand dyed fabric called Fleur from Sugar Maple Fabrics using lots of silk and metallic fibers, Delica beads and Swarovski Crystals. I may not be able to get it framed right away but right now I have it on the back of my sofa just enjoying looking at it.

Harry Potter and More...

This week has been busy for me but for the last two days I simply have not wanted to stitch. So instead I have been reading. Now don't laugh but I had never read any of the Harry Potter books. I thought they were for kids. But my friend Kiki loaned me her set and I have read the first two--in two days--and plan to start the third one tonight. These are addicitive! I cannot seem to put them down when I start reading.

I did make progress on my model this week however and before long I will be able to get back to my Japanese Garden!

Another Sunday....

Another week come and gone. Where does the time go? I have been sharing some of my recent finishes with you and I hope you are enjoying them. Today I am stitching on a model for Martina so I can't share what it is but I am making very good progress. Hopefully I will get it finished soon and can work on some more of my own projects.

Mermaid's Treasure Box and Toys

This is another recent finish that I haven't yet shared with you. It is the Mermaid's Treasure Box from Chatelaine Designs. I actually stitched two of these--one for myself and one for Judy Odell who, in exchange, professionally finished mine for me.

This is the inside of this one. There is a removable shelf, a Scissors Keep and Fob, and a Needlebook/Pin Keep. I love how Judy finished these and the colors of silk and cording are just perfect

I have the Blues...

Today is cold and drab and I feel rather down. Maybe it is post-holiday let down or maybe it is just that time of year. I have been stitching a lot and making progress on a souple of projects including my latest model for Martina. Hopefully I will have some photos to share soon.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I hope each of us have a wonderful new year. I have spent a wonderful weekend with my friends Kiki, Angel, Angela and Tracy and we had our Christmas get together. I got lots of goodies but the best part was spending time stitching and sharing with friends.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Today will be a quiet day for me. I've already had Christmas with my step-family and that just leaves Jason and me. Jason will be going to visit friends later so we will have our Christmas early and then I will spend the day stitching and watching Christmas movies on TV. But next weekend my *Stitching Buddies* will be coming to spend the weekend and we will have our Christmas then and bring in the New Year together.

The Misadventures of The Mad Stitcher—Take One

It was Sunday evening and The Mad Stitcher was frantically trying to finish up some last details before going away on a much anticipated, much needed stitching retreat to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She had been looking forward to this trip for months and the time was finally here. But she was nowhere ready for it. She still had to do laundry before she could pack and she still needed to decide just which stitching projects to take with her. Although she would only be gone for four days she always tended to pack for four weeks! She was in the process of packing her *snack* bag when she felt it—that awful twinge followed by the excruciating pain radiating down from her back to her right leg. She caught herself before she fell and managed to sit down. Noooooooo! She cried. Why now? (Strike one!)

She reached for her meds and hoped that she would be able to head it off before it became a full blown attack. She relaxed and slept for the rest of the evening and all of the following day. But on Tuesday The Mad Stitcher knew she had to get some things done. She managed to throw a load of clothes into the washing machine and then again sat down to rest. It became clear that her plans were in jeopardy. But she was determined that she was going on this trip. It only happened once a year and this was her one chance to get away from the real world for a couple of days.

Her dear friend Kiki was to come to her house on Wednesday and the two of them would drive together to the beach. She emailed Kiki to let her know what was going on but refused to cancel her plans. When Kiki arrived on Wednesday afternoon, nothing was done. But in true friendship fashion, Kiki began to sort laundry and pack for her dear friend. Soon her suitcase was ready for the last minute toiletries. The bag with the snacks was ready for loading and the cooler was ready for the soft drinks they would be taking. All that was left to do was pack the stitching bag. So as The Mad Stitcher pointed and *supervised*, the bag was readied for travel. That night the two of them went to bed early so that they could get an early start in the morning.

Thursday arrived with wonderful unseasonably warm weather and Kiki began loading the car. She wouldn’t let The Mad Stitcher do anything! Trip after trip was made until finally the last bag, box, and hanger was loaded. All that remained to do was load The Mad Stitcher’s wheelchair on to the lift attached to her car. The key was inserted and the lift lowered to the correct position. The chair was guided into place and the lift began rising. When it was about two inches off the ground it suddenly stopped. It wouldn’t move any further. Kiki started the car thinking maybe the battery was low. It didn’t help. The Mad Stitcher checked all the connections—nothing worked! What now? She thought! Finally she called the lift company. She was very frustrated and by now was in quite a bit of pain. She finally got to talk to a real person and followed all the *checks* that she suggested. She was finally reminded that she had a manual crank that she could use to finish raising the chair. After what seemed like hours--and unloading and reloading the car a couple of times--the crank was found, the chair was raised, and they were on their way at last! (Strike two!)

As she pulled out of the driveway, The Mad Stitcher began to calm down and relax a bit. It took a while but even the pain in her back and legs lessened. The two friends were able to laugh about it later and spent the next few hours driving and catching up on all the happenings of their lives and families. They had gotten a much later start but eventually arrived at the hotel in good spirits.

As they pulled into the hotel registration area, they saw their other friend and roommate Angel coming to help. They got the chair unloaded first, then Kiki and Angel unloaded the car and sent The Mad Stitcher on ahead to the room. As the Mad Stitcher approached the elevator the door was open and she moved her chair into position for entering. Just as she started into the elevator the doors closed hitting her knees. (Remember, it is her bad knees that has her in the wheelchair in the first place!) She screamed in pain and a couple ran to assist. Although the hotel staff was there in an instant the damage had already been done. The pain was unbelievable. Why had it had to hit her knees for goodness sake? Why had the door started to close in the first place? Why me? She thought. (Strike three!)

It was becoming more and more evident that this weekend should not have taken place for The Mad Stitcher. She should have stayed home and nursed her back in solitude! Statements were taken. Ice was placed on her injured knee. And The Mad Stitcher sat down to elevate her legs and recover. Kiki and Angel finished unpacking and getting everything ready for the weekend. They decided to go to a local needlepoint shop but The Mad Stitcher decided to stay in and get some rest before the weekend workshop started. When the others returned they decided to get something to eat in the hotel restaurant rather than going out again. They met up with a group of fellow stitchers and enjoyed a couple of hours together. They returned to the room and prepared for bed. Since The Mad Stitcher was unable to sleep in a bed she chose the more comfortable (she thought) of the two chairs and prepared to sleep. But unfortunately the chair was more uncomfortable than she had anticipated. She couldn’t find a restful position and her back and legs began to throb. By morning she was ready to scream! But she had known that physically it would be difficult so she kept going.

The next morning they were ready to start. The classes were wonderful. Meg Thompson Shinall (daughter of Ginnie Thompson) of the Flower Thread Company was the teacher and host. The Mad Stitcher reacquainted herself with past friends and met several new ones. The class project was lots of fun and she knew she would enjoy finishing it. She learned several new stitches and cutting techniques and was very pleased with the results. It was a sampler continuing the Full Moon Series started several years before. This one was the Buck Moon. There will be a total of twelve in this series. Past ones include Wolf Moon, Snow Moon, Linton Moon, Pink Moon, Full Flower Moon, and Strawberry Moon.

They went for seafood the following night and it was marvelous. You can never have too much seafood! And The Mad Stitcher had been looking forward to it since last year! And while the others went shopping The Mad Stitcher stayed close to *home*. The Mad Stitcher played a game of musical chairs but came to the conclusion that sleep would not be allowed for this weekend! The weekend continued without further incident except that The Mad Stitcher became more and more physically taxed and exhausted. Soon it was Sunday and time to go home. Once again Angel and Kiki packed up and loaded the car. How can it be that there is more stuff coming home when much of what was carried was consumed or left behind? The mysteries of physics? Once more the two of them were on the road. With only the minimum stop for gas and lunch, they made excellent time. They arrived and once again Kiki had the task of unloading the car. At least she was staying the night and continuing home the next morning. The Mad Stitcher was very relieved to be home. As she sat down in her *blue monster* she never would have believed that she was actually glad to see it again. Her blue chair was horribly worn out and not the most comfortable chair in the world—thus the *blue monster* tag—but compared to what she had been forced to use these last four days, it was heaven! Needless to say these two weary stitchers had a very early night of it!

The next morning Kiki reloaded her own car and dressed and headed for home—or rather work! After she left The Mad Stitcher once again fell asleep. She awoke only to go to the bathroom. She took her meds and tried to keep her feet and legs elevated. Her knees were still swollen and the bruises were still painful and *tight*. She knew she needed to take her diuretic (Lasix) but didn’t have the energy to get up and down for the bathroom every few minutes. So Monday was a wasted day. She slept all day and didn’t even stitch or check emails. Tuesday became a *dragging* day. She did nothing useful but did take her meds and check her emails—over 600….some will have to wait! Again on Wednesday she took her diuretic and began to feel slightly more human. After four days of diuretics, pain pills, rest, and recuperating The Mad Stitcher was finally able to pick up her stitching once more. Her Japanese Garden was sadly neglected but now once again would have some attention.

Although her house is still a mess, her laundry hasn’t yet been done, her lift has not yet been repaired and her body still feels like it has been through the wringer, The Mad Stitcher has no regrets. The emotional, spiritual, and psychological benefits far outweigh the physical hardships. There will always be physical barriers to cross and obstacles to overcome but time spent with friends is far too short and infrequent to let these barriers interfere. And this is one time when *Three Strikes do not make an out!*

Today is my birthday. Why do I feel so unhappy? Why do I feel so alone? I always get so depressed this time of year. I think because Bo and I have shared our birthdays for so long and now he is no longer here with me. And, of course, tomorrow is the anniversary of Mom's death. It seems I am losing everyone who means anything to me. The only person I have left is my son Jason. What would I do without him?

Saturdays of Summer

Days go by....one by one....and suddenly a month has passed and then two or twelve. Where does the time go? It seems that it was only a very short while ago that I sat talking with my Dad and watching the baseball game. Daddy loved baseball as much as I do. It was he that taught me the game. He taught me all the ins and outs and even the *infield fly rule*! Growing up my brothers weren't interested in it and my Mom could care less. But every Saturday afternoon my Daddy and I would sit and watch the Game of the Week on TV. This was back in the dark ages before cable television, of course. So we only got to see one game each week. And each week there were different teams playing. The Dodgers were my favorites. But Daddy always pulled for the Cardinals! So it was especially fun when these teams played each other. And don't anyone interrupt us during the World Series! The house would have had to be on fire to get us away from the TV then! The Boys of Summer were a special breed. And those days were a special time. I always loved those Saturdays of Summer.

I remember when the Braves moved to Atlanta. My Daddy was so happy that he signed up for cable TV so he could watch every telecast. We now had a *local* team to pull for. It didn't matter that technically we were not local. It was close enough. So for many years The Atlanta Braves was *our team*--win or lose. And Daddy watched them play every day that they played for as long as he lived.

But today I looked at the calendar. Twenty years.....where has the time gone? It has been twenty years today since my Daddy watched his last baseball game. I sure do miss those Saturdays of Summer and you, Daddy!

Bells by Jeanette

Bells by Jeanette, originally uploaded by The Mad Stitcher.

I have received another wonderful stitched piece for my Crazy Quilt. It was stitched by Jeanette from Alberta, Canada, and it is gorgeous, Sshe chose my favorite colors--red and hunter green! Thought I would share it with you. It will definitely make a wonderful square although I am so tempted to make a pillow of it for my sofa! As you can see it matches the sofa fabric perfectly! Thanks, Jeanette. It is wonderful, my dear friend!
